Holding my own Hand

Janis Joplin

Standing before my reflection, I am looking at Her in the eye. Naked, open, raw and always honest. This is Me. With all my flaws and imperfections I know I am all I have. Despite the love that surrounds me, the friendships, companionship. Ultimately when everything is removed I am standing with Me holding my own hand. I need to be okay with that.

In previous posts I have written about how I choose to live my life in an Intentional way.

I strive to be true to myself, to be authentic and live in the present moment. I just want to be the best version of me. Many years ago I realized that at the foundation of living in the world I wanted to inhabit, was understanding and defining my core values. These underpin everything that matters in my world. They give me structure from which all else is generated.

My key values have enabled me to fine tune my decision making processes, define the kind of people I want in my life and remove those who did not meet the criteria. They ensure that I respect my body and mind. My values also help me be honest with myself, allowing me to confront my fears and challenge them. They keep me true and force me to acknowledge when I am not being my best. I apologize when I stuff up. Then I make changes to ensure I do not make that error of judgment again.

What matters to me most is making sure I live my values. Every single day without compromise. Ultimately when everything is removed I am standing with Me holding my own hand, and I have to be okay with that.

This post was written for Friday Reflections. The prompt was to reflect on the Janis Joplin quote above.

Loved this post Sarah. It isn't always easy to stay true to your principles (for me), but is well worth making the effort. Great post on the Joplin quote.

It is hard work. Some days are epic fails, some people bring out the worst in me. I think it's just important to know what your striving for and then remember to forgive yourself for off times. No one is perfect, we all stuff up and that's ok too.
